Owen Hargreaves bid “for the long awaited return to the matter was dealt a hammer blow, as The Times reports that Manchester United have closed the midfield in the Champions League roster.

The former Bayern Munich star has not played in over 16 months – his last trip against Chelsea came back in September 2008 – because of a tendinitis problem that requires major surgery on both knees.

He was included in the selection of the Red Devils to the Champions League group stage, but setback after setback that has prevented the 29-year-old from making a sort of pitch contribution in this term.

Sir Alex Ferguson recently revealed that he expected Hargreaves to right in the mix for the next knockout draw against AC Milan, but now there are fears that he would grace the field at all before the end of the season.

This bad omen for the chances of the Canadian-born anchor man to make England’s World Cup Squad, as Fabio Capello – but a self-known fan of Hargreaves – has made it clear that only fully fit players will be on their way to South Africa.
